Most people would use a pencil to create art, but in this case a pencil is the art. Check out these amazing lead carvings by the Brazilian artist, Dalton M. Ghetti. Refusing to use a magnifying glass and having never sold a single piece, Ghetti uses just a sewing needle to create these incredibly intricate sculptures. The Elvis one is a particular favourite!

Designs of the Year 2013

It’s the time of year when the London Design Museum displays some of the most exciting designs from the past year. Some pretty amazing innovations from across the world are exhibited in seven different categories including architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphic, transport and (most excitingly) product.

Entries are diverse, ranging from the perfectly small to the prospectively world changing. Some of our favourites products range from the non-stick ketchup bottle which looks set to make condiment history (the ‘LiquiGlide’ material lining the inside of the bottle means no more infuriating whacking of the ketchup bottle!) to a South Korean chainless bicycle to the Little Printer which connects via your smart phone to your apps and social media streams to spool out compilations of updates on demand in the form of a mini newspaper. Also on show are a pair of revolutionary Child Vision Glasses. These fun frames can be manually adjusted to provide vision to those all over the globe without access to an optician.

All nominations for Design of the Year 2013 are on display now and the winner will be announced on the 17th of April. It looks like a tricky decision, as every entry breaks the boundary of simple functionality and each candidate in their own individual way shows off some pretty mind-boggling ingenuity. Fortunately for us, we can just relax and enjoy this dynamic show, which is on display until the 7th of July. Until you go check it out for yourself, see below for a sneak preview!

Recruitment consultant by day, talented photo-shopper by night, he’s built up a compelling online Zoo by digitally morphing together existing creatures and forming them into these freaky crossbreeds. This is digital taxidermy at its best (without the skinning and stuffing) and here are some of Spinning Hat’s favourite specimens!
